SELF-PACED TUTORIAL: Student Employee Training<https://my.nicheacademy.com/oregonstaff/course/83892> (Oregon Library Staff Academy – Oregon libraries only)
Student employees are a vital—and growing—part of academic library services, from cataloging to the reference desk. But training them is tough. High turnover and erratic schedules mean you have to train every semester. Training quality varies by department, or even by supervisor. And the students themselves may find training. . .less than engaging, meaning you have to answer the same questions over and over. But how do you make it consistent, cohesive, and engaging? Is that even possible? And is it possible to do it without taking up too much of your time? We can help you make student training easy and effective. ARTICLE: From Awareness to Action: Trauma-Informed Approaches in Libraries<https://www.ila.org/publications/ila-reporter/article/202/from-awareness-to-action-trauma-informed-approaches-in-libraries> (June 2024, ILA Reporter, Illinois Library Association)
Library employees witness or experience traumatic events that can lead to secondary traumatic stress (STS), and libraries are often unprepared to deal with the adverse effects of this on their staff. According to the Urban Library Trauma Study (2022), libraries are “radically open to the public” and often serve populations affected by traumatic events. This is a departure from libraries of the past that focused primarily on books, information, and education. In addition to providing books, today’s libraries provide access to social services, bridge the digital divide, function as a community gathering space, and host programs and events (Mattern, 2014). Across the U.S., libraries have begun looking for answers to help with the increased demand for social services. Some libraries have hired or partnered with social workers and agencies to better deal with traumatic crises. WEBINAR: Trauma-Informed Services in Libraries<https://my.nicheacademy.com/oregonstaff/course/63849> (Oregon Library Staff Academy – Oregon libraries only)
Ever encounter a patron whose behavior or comments leave you wondering, what is wrong with them? Trauma is often a silent unknown event that many people experience. It can affect how people behave and interact with others.

In this webinar, Beatriz De La Espriella will cover how trauma can change the brain, the impact it has on individuals, and how trauma-informed services can transform the way we provide services to our patrons and connect with our community. You will leave this presentation with the tools you need to serve patrons with empathy, avoid re-traumatization, and strategies that are vital for self-care when providing trauma-informed services.

By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

· Define trauma and the impact trauma and adverse childhood experiences have on the brain and the individual

· Identify ways to provide trauma-informed services that avoid re-traumatization

· Recognize how to effectively communicate with individuals who may have experienced a traumatic event.

· Identify strategies to support library staff’s self-care.

Presenter: Beatriz De La Espriella is a bilingual Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified Trauma Informed Care professional, and a Mental Health Educator. Beatriz is the founder of Bea Mindful Coaching, where she provides mental health and trauma-informed training to libraries. Beatriz has presented and facilitated professional development training to educators, mental health school staff, and library staff in the areas of child abuse, suicide, crisis response, toxic stress, self-care, mindfulness, trauma-informed services and mental health awareness.
