MOBILE - What Subscriptions Is Your Phone Charging You?

Intermediate

[A digital collage of numerous social media and app icons, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Pinterest, displayed in a blue-toned, angled grid pattern.]

It is so easy to download an app on your phone and sign up for a free trial. It is even easier to forget you signed up for it and now it is charging you!

Subscriptions often feel small…$4.99 here or $9.99 there…but they add up fast.

There is a solution! Your phone keeps a running list of subscriptions tied to its platform: Apple or Android. Reviewing them every few months can help you spot forgotten free trials. It also helps you cancel apps you no longer use. A quick check can save you real money.

NOTE: These steps show items billed through your Apple or Google ID.

Subscriptions purchased directly from a vendor will not appear here.

See Your Subscriptions on an iPhone

If you use an iPhone, subscriptions are tied to your Apple ID. They can be accessed through the App Store.

How to find your subscriptions:

1. Open the App Store.

2. Access your account information by clicking the profile icon in the upper right.

[A mobile account settings screen showing user info at the top and a menu below. The "Subscriptions" option is highlighted with a red oval. Other options include Apps, Purchase History, and Notifications.]

3. Select Subscriptions.

This screen shows you both active and inactive apps. Remember, only items billed through Apple appear here.

Tap any subscription to:
· Change the plan.
· Cancel future renewals.
· See past billing details.

See Your Subscriptions on an Android

If you use an Android phone, your app subscriptions are managed through the Google Play Store.

[A menu with options including "Manage accounts on this device," "Manage apps and device," "Notifications and offers," and "Payments and subscriptions," which is highlighted with a red oval.]

How to find your subscriptions:

1. Open the Google Play Store app.

2. Tap your profile icon in the top-right.

3. Choose Payments and subscriptions.

4. Tap Subscriptions.

This screen shows you both active and canceled subscriptions. You can also see the billing cycles and future charges.

From the subscriptions screen, you can:
· Cancel a subscription you no longer want.
· See how much you’re paying and how often.
· Restart a canceled subscription if you change your mind.

CAUTION: Subscriptions do not transfer automatically if you switch phone brands. Each platform manages its own (Apple/Android).

Communications: 12 Power Words #8

“Tell me more”

You’re having a conversation with a colleague, friend or family member. You’re a little confused.

Maybe you don’t understand the concept they are trying to get across. Or perhaps you’re not ready to make a comment, to disagree, or to heartily endorse what’s being said.

[Two young women sit outdoors by the water, smiling and holding mugs. One wears a denim jacket and the other wears a striped shirt. A boat and trees are visible in the background at sunset.]

Just say, “Tell me more.” It buys you time. Plus, you’ll then often hear what is really going on. Your friend will elaborate without feeling as if they weren’t being clear or that you weren’t listening well enough.

Instead, they will think, “Great, they are engaged. They want to know more. They want to understand.”

Another situation when you can use, “Tell me more” is when you have zoned out a bit when a colleague was talking, and you don’t want to offend them by saying you weren’t listening … would they please repeat it.

“Tell me more” is a neutral statement that will help you gracefully get back on track.
