Treasury was just notified this morning about a new merchant card scam. It
involves someone posing as a merchant services representative who calls the
merchant saying that the merchant's bankcard equipment is not batching out
correctly. The caller then indicates that a technician will be sent out to
reprogram the bankcard equipment. Soon thereafter, a technician arrives
wearing a merchant services shirt and a name tag. In the instance we are
aware of, the technician then told the merchant that he needed to take the
bankcard machine off the premises to reprogram it and would return within a
half an hour. However, the technician never returned with the machine; and
there is information available that indicates that the person was attempting
to download customer bankcard information from the machine.

If you or any other staff receive such a phone call or have anyone show up
that identifies his or herself as a merchant services technician, please do
not allow them to touch or take any bankcard equipment; and immediately
contact your merchant services representative.
