Justice Department Observes National Missing Children's Day
The U.S. Department of Justice held its annual National Missing Children's Day ceremony, which is organized by OJJDP, on May 20, 2015. National Center for Missing & Exploited Children<http://www.missingkids.com/home> (NCMEC) Board Chair Patty Wetterling, United States Postal Service (USPS) Judicial Officer William Campbell, and abduction survivor and child advocate Carlina White offered remarks at the event.
"More and more missing children are being recovered," said Ms. Wetterling. "In the last 5 years at NCMEC, 4,835 children were recovered after being missing 6 months or more. Remarkably, 468 of those children were recovered after more than 5 years, and 228 had been missing more than 10 years." Ms. Wetterling added that NCMEC recently held a summit on best practices for investigating long-term missing children cases.
Judge Campbell affirmed the USPS' long-term commitment to help find missing children. He described the new Missing Children's Day stamp<http://about.usps.com/news/national-releases/2015/pr15_028.htm>, which shows a group of purple forget-me-nots, a lone flower, and the words "Forget-Me Not" and "Help Find Missing Children." Judge Campbell remarked that the words will inspire the USPS "to watch, to hope, and to imagine a day when they deliver more than just mail, but an answer to a plea for a child's return."
Ms. White, who was abducted in 1987 after her birth and reunited with her biological parents after 23 years, said that after discovering who she was, she decided to help others get their children back. "Since then, I receive so many e-mails from children and adults sharing their stories and questioning if they're with the right family and requesting help."
Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch presided over the Missing Children's Day ceremony. The event honored three law enforcement officers and an assistant principal for their efforts to recover missing children, rescue children from abuse, and prosecute sexual predators. Assistant Attorney General Karol V. Mason of the Office of Justice Programs and OJJDP Administrator Robert L. Listenbee also spoke and presented awards to the honorees.

A Bureau of Justice Statistics survey found violent crime rate in 2013 against persons with disabilities was more than double the age-adjusted rate for persons without disabilities. Read more in Crime Against Persons with Disabilities, 2009-2013 - Statistical Tables<http://www.bjs.gov/index.cfm?ty=pbdetail&iid=5280&utm_source=newsfrombjs-052115&utm_medium=email&utm_content=Crime%20Against%20Persons%20with%20Disabilities%202009%E2%80%932013%20Statistical%20Tables&utm_campaign=newsfrombjs> . In 2013, the rate of violent crime against persons with disabilities (36 per 1,000) was more than twice the age-adjusted rate for persons without disabilities (14 per 1,000). Age-adjusted rates were used because persons with disabilities were generally older than persons without disabilities. Persons who had disabilities experienced an estimated 1.3 million nonfatal violent victimizations, which accounted for about a fifth (21%) of all violent victimizations in 2013. OAASIS- Oregon Abuse Advocates and Survivors in Service

We want to invite you to a very special "anti-oppression" training we are having on Saturday, June 13, 2015, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. As part of our Quarterly Chats, this is a workshop you will not want to miss!

We believe that child sex abuse is a form of oppression that intersects with other forms of oppression. This training will help attendees gain a broader sense of these connections, and will explore ways that oppression stands in the way of our efforts to end child sex abuse here in Oregon.
