Listening With the Third Ear: Transference, Countertransference, and Clinical Storytelling
Designed for experienced therapists, this workshop introduces a set of caveats in the interpretation of clinical material, focusing on how storytelling conventions in the broader culture often work their way into the therapeutic encounter.
Enlisting the metaphor of "listening with a third ear," Professor Haaken will outline a method for working at the border of psyche and society, and for understanding how cultural dynamics shape the narrative structuring of ambiguous clinical material.
Participants will learn to:
1) Apply a cultural analysis of storytelling to examples of clinical material
2) Understand key ethical issues in relation to therapeutic interpretation
3) Discuss the relationship between cultural dynamics and therapeutic interactions, including transference and countertransference processes.
