Trans Families: It’s Everyone’s Transition
When a person transitions from one gender role/bodily sex to another, everyone they are close to also undertakes their own form of transition. This course will examine the nature of transition from the perspective of family members/close friends.
This course requires no prior knowledge of trans issues and is designed for counselors, therapists and other mental healthcare professionals, school counselors, and staff at family services agencies.
Upon completion of this course, participants will understand:
• What “trans” means, and how gender differs from sexual orientation;
• How different forms of relationship may be impacted by transition (spouse/partner, parents, siblings, offspring, etc.);
• The long-term nature of the transition process, and how issues change over time;
• The therapist’s role in supporting transition, depending on who the client is.
Dates: Friday-Saturday, September 12-13, 2014
Time: 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
Location: Lewis & Clark College, Portland, OR
Instructor: Reid Vanderburgh, M.A.
