Please read the message below regarding Lexile scores. We will add
Lexile scores on Reading and Literature test records as they are loaded
to the Student Staging System. We do not currently have a methodology
to pass this information along to districts. If there is an
overwhelming interest in districts getting this information as part of
the test results, ODE would provide this field as part of the PADM
download format. The issue here is we did anticipate there would be
lexile scores at the beginning of the school year and did not publish a
change in the download format. So... please let me know if you would
like the additional data element to be part of the PADM download this
year. Thanks!
As part of the Oregon Literacy Initiative, the Oregon Statewide Reading
and Literature Assessment was linked this spring to The Lexile Framework
for Reading (http://www.lexile.com). As a result of this linkage, every
student in grades 3, 5, 8, and CIM who has taken the Oregon Statewide
Reading and Literature Assessment will receive a Lexile reading measure
on the Individual Student Report this spring.
The Lexile Framework for Reading measures text difficulty and current
student reading ability, putting both texts and readers on the same
scale to accurately match readers to texts. A Lexile measure for either
texts or readers is a simple number followed by an "L" (e.g., "850L").
The Lexile scale ranges from 200L for a beginning reader to 1700L for
advanced texts. See FAQ at
http://www.lexile.com/DesktopDefault.aspx?view=ed&tabindex=6&tabid=18.
Because The Lexile Framework measures both readers and reading
materials, parents, teachers and students can use Lexiles to determine
if a text is too easy, too difficult, or just right for a student. But a
Lexile measure is more than a test score. It applies to books and
articles that a student encounters daily - at school, home, and in the
library. The Lexile Framework takes the guesswork out of matching
readers with appropriate texts. It can be used to promote reading
progress and to assign the right level of reading materials in other
curriculum areas.
You may access additional information about Lexiles at
www.ode.state.or.us/priorities/literacy/lexiles beginning May 27.
