2004 fishing, hunting and shellfish licenses go on sale Monday
Anglers and hunters will pay more for licenses and tags in 2004

SALEM - Monday, Dec. 1, marks the first day that Oregon anglers and
hunters may purchase licenses and tags for the 2004 fishing and hunting
seasons.

License and tag fees have been adjusted to keep pace with rising fish
and wildlife management costs. The new fees will enable the Oregon
Department of Fish and Wildlife to continue to support the public's
priorities: hatcheries, enforcement, field biologists and landowner
services. The fee increase is the first approved for ODFW by the Oregon
Legislature in four years.

Resident anglers and hunters will see a $5 increase in many of the most
popular licenses and tags, including annual fishing licenses, annual
hunting licenses, deer and elk tags, and combined angling harvest cards.
Fees have not increased for juvenile licenses and tags, hatchery harvest
tags, cougar tags and bear tags. Nonresident hunters and anglers will
experience larger fee increases than residents. All fees are posted to
the ODFW Web site at
http://www.dfw.state.or.us/ODFWhtml/Regulations/regs.html. [Editor's
note: The fees also are provided below.]

Starting Jan. 1, 2004, anyone harvesting shellfish in Oregon must
possess a recreational shellfish license. The cost for a resident annual
shellfish license is $6.50. The cost for non-residents is $16.50. A
three-day non-resident shellfish license is $9.

A new law adopted in the 2003 Legislative Session requires any person
14 years of age or older in the act of harvesting any shellfish
including, but not limited to, clams, crab, mussels, abalone, oysters,
piddocks, shrimp or scallops, or any one in the possession of such
shellfish in the field, must have in their possession a valid
recreational shellfish license. Any person harvesting crayfish or
freshwater clams does not need a license.

Anglers and hunters who purchase any big game tags or a combined
angling harvest card will notice the background color of the "sleeve"
has changed from pink to light blue. All 2004 tags and cards must have
the light blue sleeve. The change in color will help Oregon State Police
to enforce fish and game regulations.

Angling and hunting licenses and tags are available at more than 500
license agents statewide and at many ODFW offices. The 2004 big game and
angling regulations booklets also will be available at license agents by
Dec. 10, 2003.
