Comment period extended for deer and elk management objective proposals

 

SALEM - Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife officials today announced
the public comment period is extended for proposals to update the
state's mule deer and elk management objectives. 

 

Management objectives are used by biologists to help guide harvest
management decisions related to herd health, habitat and wildlife damage
to property.

The proposals call for changes to reflect improved population
information, long-term or permanent changes in habitat availability, and
changes in the amount of property damage throughout Oregon's 67 Wildlife
Management Units.

 

The management objectives for deer were last updated in 1992. Elk
management objectives were updated in 1994. 

 

ODFW biologists presented the proposed management objective revisions at
more than 20 meetings held throughout Oregon in February and March 

The proposed management objectives will be presented to the Oregon Fish
and Wildlife Commission for approval at its June 20 meeting in Salem.
The Commission is the policy-making body for fish and wildlife issues in
the state.

 

Interested individuals are invited to offer comments in writing, or they
may testify before the Commission at its May meeting in Prineville or
June meeting in Salem. All comments must be received by June 10, to be
considered. However, the Commission encourages anyone submitting written
comments to do so by May 20, in order for them to be printed with the
commission packets and to allow adequate time to review them.
