Hatchery Research Center dedication scheduled Friday
 
WHAT:  Grand opening of the Oregon Hatchery Research Center, a $7.8
million facility designed to research hatchery and wild salmon, ensuring
a successful future for both. 
 
WHEN:  Friday, Oct. 14. Ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Tours of
facility offered until 4 p.m.
 
WHO: Speakers at the ribbon-cutting ceremony include Governor Theodore
Kulongoski, Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission Chair Marla Rae, Oregon
State University Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Chair Dan Edge,
and Oregon Hatchery Research Center Senior Scientist David Noakes.  
 
WHERE: The Oregon Hatchery Research Center (OHRC) is located directly
off Highway 34 between Alsea and Waldport.  Signs are posted.
 
EDITORS NOTE: The goal of the center is to ensure the ongoing viability
of Oregon's fish populations and their attendant economic, cultural and
ecological benefits. The site includes several visual story elements,
including artificial streams that mimic natural conditions, a
laboratory, traditional raceways for rearing fish and an interpretive
center. 
 
Built with funds appropriated by the 2003 Oregon Legislature, the
research center will benefit all Oregonians. Research conducted at the
OHRC will support science-based decisions about fish management, which
ultimately will impact Oregon's economy, land management, and recreation
industry.
