The ACEC / ODOT Partnership for Excellence Presents
Calibration of Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for the Wave
Equation Analysis of Pile Driving Program
June 24, 2010, 12 noon to 1:00 pm*
ODOT Region 1, 123 NW Flanders, Portland
Conference Room A&B
On behalf of the ACEC/ODOT Partnership for excellence, we welcome your
attendance at Region 1's June Geo-Hydro brownbag session: "Calibration
of Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for the Wave Equation
Analysis of Pile Driving Program."
The Wave Equation Analysis of Pile Driving program (WEAP) is an industry
standard computer program used to study pile drivability issues, pile
driving stresses and estimate pile load bearing capacity while the pile
is being driven. Starting in October 2007, the FHWA required states to
use the new AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. It is known for
ODOT that by using the AASHTO LRFD default WEAP resistance factor will
result in significantly more conservative pile designs than those prior
under allowable stress design (asd) prior to LRFD. This will result in
much more expensive foundation costs for bridge construction using
driven piles. The objective of the research is to recalibrate the LRFD
resistance factor for ODOT standards of practice under initial driving
and restrike conditions for use with the WEAP program. Dr. Smith will
present the current findings of the research.
