The Freedom to Read Foundation (FTRF) is excited to partner with the San Jose State University School of Information (SJSU iSchool) and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign iSchool (iSchool at Illinois) on two Fall intellectual freedom courses. In addition to encouraging students throughout the country to take the course, FTRF is offering one half-scholarship per course for current library and information science (LIS) students.

Professor Carrie Gardner will lead a 3-credit, asynchronous Intellectual Freedom Seminar, INFO 234, through the SJSU iSchool between August 21 and December 9, 2019. Gardner has taught an intellectual freedom course since 2002 and her courses explore topics ranging from the legal foundation of the First Amendment to intellectual freedom history, policies, ethics, and privacy, and the ways these topics intersect in our libraries. Students interested in the course can contact SJSU iSchool online or by calling (408) 924-2490 for more information. You can find the school online at ischool.sjsu.edu<http://ischool.sjsu.edu/>.

iSchool at Illinois Professor Emily Knox will offer a 2-credit synchronous online course, Intellectual Freedom and Censorship. Her course approaches intellectual freedom as an ethical issue based in interpretations of the First Amendment of the United States and the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. It meets from October 22 through December 10, 2019. Students interested in the course can contact Karla Lucht, klucht at illinois.edu<http://klucht@illinois.edu/> or visit http://ischool.illinois.edu<http://ischool.illinois.edu/>.

Students interested in one of the courses are encouraged to apply for a scholarship. Applications for the scholarships are due May 3, 2019. For more information and to apply for the scholarship visit www.ftrf.org/?Krug_Education<http://www.ftrf.org/?Krug_Education> or contact Yumeka Brown at ybrown at ala.org<http://ybrown@ala.org/>.

The Freedom to Read Foundation (www.ftrf.org<http://www.ftrf.org/>) is a First Amendment legal defense and education organization affiliated with the American Library Association. In 2009, following the death of its founding executive director Judith Krug, FTRF created the Judith Krug Memorial Fund. The Krug Fund has two purposes: to support Banned Books Week via event grants to organizations, and to provide intellectual freedom education. For more information on the Krug Fund, or to make a donation to support its work, please visit www.ftrf.org/?Krug_Fund<http://www.ftrf.org/?Krug_Fund>.
