College Alcohol Problems Exceed Previous Estimates
The harm caused by alcohol consumption among college students
may exceed previous estimates of the problem. Researchers report that
unintentional fatal injuries related to alcohol increased from about
1,500
in 1998 to more than 1,700 in 2001 among U.S. college students aged
18-24.
Over the same period national surveys indicate the number of students
who
drove under the influence of alcohol increased by 500,000, from 2.3
million
to 2.8 million. The new findings appear in the 2005 issue of the
Annual
Review of Public Health, now online at
http://arjournals.annualreviews.org/loi/publhealth

"Health Affairs" - Critical issue
What do U.S. Senator Bill Frist, Senator Edward Kennedy, former surgeon
general Dr. David Satcher, the Institute of Medicine, the presidents of
the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation,
California Endowment, and the chairman of Aetna all have in common?
They all agree that current Health disparities in the U.S. are
unacceptable and need to be addressed...and they have all contributed
articles to the current issue of the journal Health Affairs.
DHS-Office of Multicultural Health (OMH) recommends all Health Services
staff take advantage of this extraordinary resource, relevant to all of
our work.
The entire March/April edition is devoted to the examination of Health
disparities and includes some of the latest research and thinking on the
topic.
All the articles are available online (at no cost) at:
http://content.healthaffairs.org/current.shtml
(Scroll down webpage to see table of contents.)
DHS-Office of Multicultural Health provides the following services to
DHS-HS programs, staff and community partners:
-- cultural competence assessment
-- technical assistance and consultation
-- customized cultural competence training
-- library of video and print materials on cultural competence and
Health disparities
-- collaboration on improvement of data related to Health disparities
For more information on OMH services, contact Alexis Asihene
(alexis.m.asihene at state.or.us or 503-731-4158) or me.
Look forward to working with you on this critical issue.

Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative funding opportunity for FY
2005
The U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and
Justice have announced the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative
funding opportunity for FY 2005. A collaborative effort of the three
departments, this discretionary grant program provides local educational
agencies (LEAs) with federal funding to implement an enhanced,
coordinated, comprehensive plan of activities, programs, and services
that focus on promoting healthy childhood development and preventing
violence and substance abuse.
LEAs or consortia of LEAs that have not received funds or services
under the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative during any previous
fiscal year may be eligible to receive awards of up to $1,000,000 per
year for Bureau of Indian Affairs schools or LEAs or consortia in rural
areas; $2,000,000 per year for LEAs or consortia in suburban areas; and
$3,000,000 per year for LEAs or consortia in urban areas.

Two overview papers on Co-occurring disorders
SAMHSA's Co-Occurring Center for Excellence (COCE) is pleased to
announce the release of two Overview Papers - "Definitions and Terms
Relevant to Co-Occurring Disorders" and "Screening, Assessment, and
Treatment Planning for Persons with COD," now available on the COCE Web
site at http://www.coce.samhsa.gov/cod_resources/papers.htm These papers
are the first in a series of 16 papers that are designed as concise and
easy-to-read introductions to state-of-the-art knowledge in COD. The
papers build upon existing research and consensus documents and
synthesize available knowledge for a broad audience of stakeholders
concerned with effective responses to the needs of persons with
co-occurring disorders. The papers are intended to guide COCE technical
assistance and training efforts. The COCE overview papers follow a
rigorous development process, including peer review. They incorporate
contributions from COCE Senior Staff, Senior Fellows, consultants, and
the CDM production team. For other recent updates to the COCE Web site,
