We've used a product from Zeba here in Oregon (buy local!) for both our
hanging baskets and pots..extremely effective.

Let me know what you find for pots..we did a pot project in our downtown
about 12 years ago that was very effective, but with the passage of time
we're due for another initiative.

Good luck!

Subject: [OMS_MANAGERS] Flower Pots on sidewalk

A small doable project The Greater Enterprise Main Streets Group wants to
tackle for this season is purchasing and planting some large flower pots to
place on the sidewalk at principal intersections. The long-term goal is to
install hanging baskets from the decorative lamp posts but past experience
has shown that in our dry climate we will need a built in water system for
hanging baskets to be successful. In the past when baskets were purchased
and installed on Main St. by sponsoring businesses we had a very difficult
time getting enough water to them for the baskets to flourish. Ground based
pots will remain moist longer and be easier to water.

Can anyone recommend a good soil amendment that will help retain water. I
have read and heard about gel pellets that can be added to the potting soil
but I have no experience with such things and am looking for some
suggestions of what might work best.

Thanks!
