HPLO Program Asks: "Will There Be a THERE, There?"
A conversation about preservation, design, development, and saving our
unique sense of place.
What will Portland look like in 2035? In our race for sustainability,
density, and development, will we lose the human scale and historic
character that sets us apart? As Portland, Eugene, and other cities debate
their long-range urban plans, a program by the Historic Preservation League
of Oregon (HPLO) asks: "Will There Be A THERE, There?" and points out that
the design of our built environment matters a great deal. They are bringing
noted author, architect, and critic Dr. Steven Semes to town for "a
conversation about preservation, design, development, and saving our unique
sense of place."
Semes, who has practiced architecture for 30 years, recently returned to the
U.S. after serving as the Program Director of the Rome Studies Institute and
currently serves on the faculty of Notre Dame University.
His book, The Future of the Past: A Conservation Ethic for Architecture,
Urbanism, and Historic Preservation (W. W. Norton & Co., 2009), is wildly
popular within the growing New Urbanism movement, and is considered
essential reading for architects and professionals in historic preservation,
urban design, and planning, as well as community activists and architecture
lovers everywhere.
Semes challenges the conventional wisdom about Modernism, density,
sustainability, and what makes for compatible infill in historic settings.
He makes a persuasive case that context matters and that new buildings and
additions to old buildings should be harmonious with their neighbors.
>From North Mississippi to downtown Beaverton to SE Division, we've all seen
new development that looks like a spaceship dropped into a historic
district, entirely out of scale and character. The HPLO program will
include a panel discussion on how we can achieve development goals without
sacrificing livability, lead by Michael Mehaffey, former Education Director
of the Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment and Project Manager for
Orenco Station. The panel will include notable representatives of the
Portland development, planning, architecture and preservation communities:
Peter Englander (PDC), Jill Sherman (Gerding Edlen), Becca Cavell (Thomas
Hacker Architects), Roger Roper (SHPO), and Cathy Galbraith (Bosco-Milligan
Foundation).
