Here's another way for kids to learn the value of community entrepreneurial
spirit-if on a smaller scale.

My son (age 16) has his own sidewalk-washing business. He came up with a
business name, "Curb Appeal" and produced a business card and advertising
flyer. He focuses on our historic District and Main Street business area,

and every now and then washes the sidewalks in front of vacant storefronts
in the district. He'll be volunteering his time and power washer with our
Main St. group for our upcoming Community Clean-Up Day (and trying to
strong-arm some of his buddies into helping).

He's making money, interacting with merchants and learning about the
realities of business in a small town, getting an earful of "The Value of
Historic Districts" from his mom, and, most importantly, learning to be an
positive and active member of the community.

Maybe there are kids in your town with novel ideas for businesses that
contribute to the community!

Just in case you couldn't tell, I'm a proud mom-

Sheri,

One of our downtown merchants did a brilliant job of encouraging the
entrepreneurial spirit in our local youth. I wanted to share because it
could be so easily duplicated. The merchant, Therese Nguyen, was brilliant
in marketing the program she got a lot of participants, it brought a great
crowd downtown when she announced the winners and she got news coverage! I
have forwarded her announcement for your review. She would be a good person
to share info at our networking meeting if there was time. ~Kristin
