In Port Orford, local musicians do public events for free, with tips, or low fees - very supportive of the Farmer's Market and other events. I didn't realize how lucky we are.

ASCAP is in essence owned by music writers/publishers while BMI is owned by the broadcast industry. For free/smaller scale events, the fee is typically a lot lower - not sure why your Farmers' Market was so high. I know for a few years, both were getting more aggressive in monitoring public performance of licensed music. You might check to see if you use a band that already has a license whether you need to have separate as well.

I recently spoke with Beth Wasley who is in charge of our Farmer’s Market; last year ASCAP charged the Farmer’s Market $960.00 for the season to play music downtown. La Grande Main Street has used the local radio stations at our most recent events, however, if you have any additional suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.
