[OMS_MANAGERS] Music Downtwon - ASCAP

One way around the ASCAP fee might be to use local musicians who write
original music. I was surprised to learn how many musicians do this. For
instance, my granddaughter composes her own piano music, and many of her
peers do the same.

I don't want to seem like a representative of ASCAP or BMI, and before
moving to Oregon, when I was vendor at a downtown farmers market and we had
local musicians playing we didn't obtain a license, but if you really want
to be doing things up and up and by the book, then to repeat myself and
remind you of Sheri's reply last week, check out the ASCAP and BMI sites to
learn about their licensing requirements.

Angi

In Port Orford, local musicians do public events for free, with tips, or low
fees - very supportive of the Farmer's Market and other events. I didn't
realize how lucky we are.

What about just offering local musicians an opportunity to play for 'tips'?

Thank you for the suggestion Sheri.

ASCAP assessed the Farmer's Market like a shopping mall, under 300,000
square feet. We are now trying to figure out a way around this.

Thanks again!

Hi Alana,

ASCAP and BMI are two of the major companies that collect royalties for
public use of music (there is also Sesac and maybe others?). ASCAP is in
essence owned by music writers/publishers while BMI is owned by the
broadcast industry. For free/smaller scale events, the fee is typically a
lot lower - not sure why your Farmers' Market was so high. I know for a few
years, both were getting more aggressive in monitoring public performance of
licensed music. You might check to see if you use a band that already has a
license whether you need to have separate as well.

Hi All,

I wanted to inquire with you about how you go about playing music at your
downtown events. I recently spoke with Beth Wasley who is in charge of our
Farmer's Market; last year ASCAP charged the Farmer's Market $960.00 for the
season to play music downtown. La Grande Main Street has used the local
radio stations at our most recent events, however, if you have any
additional suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
