Hello Stephenie
I did very much enjoy your web pages but cold find no direct link to email
you from there and I was interested in the entry found there. "The
approximately 40 members" would account for the 30+ members of the Lee Party
that linked together in St. Joe and then there were the "16 members that
stayed behind at the Whitman Mission" and were part of the Whitman Mission
Massacre there. All this is from Anna Harvey (Green) Lee's diary and her
quote from it below. The train did split in 2 but only part way and it was
done because so many were ill and were holding back the 100 wagons in the
train. Another quote from Anna Harvey (Green) Lee's diary. "The train joined
together at American Falls" because of the Death of Anna Harvey (Green) Lee
s brother John Harvey Green sp of Philinda Lee. Another reason for rejoining
the full train was they were really beginging to "fear the indians found in
the territory ahead" of them. This would put the party well up over 40.
...3) Capt. Wylie Chapman: party was called Osklaoosa Company and included
Saunders, Canfields, Sawyers, Bakers. There were reportedly approximately 40
members in this party. At one point it joined up with the party led by Capt.
Bewley...
Diary of Anna Harvey (Green) Lee: "All 4 children of Josephus Lee joined
together in St. Joe, Missouri on "The Oskaloosa Train" June 15, 1847. Lead
by Capt. Wiley Chapman."
