I know I should know the differance but don't think it matters here;

You can get homestead patent info from BLM Oregon/Washigton here;

http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/Default.asp?

for general BLM index includeing patent info;

http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/visitors/StateResearch.asp

For eastern states go;

http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/Visitors/statetime.asp

I am not sure exactly how last page works, but top page should bring up a
dialogue box where you can pick a state, (I see that page actually has some
of the eastern states too??) then type in a last and first name. If you
think the number of hits will be small you might want to try just surname. I
did that with Melvin and discovered not only Gram and Great grand that I
knew but two great unks and a cousin had patents.

Some of these have the option of giving you an image of the patent, not very
many but some.

Otherwise you get a page with a description of general info and the second
tab brings up the legal description of the parcel(s) in the range/township
grid. If anyone needs a refresher course on those I can probably dig up my
old lecture.
