Dan Grampa Hewitt made two trips to three trips to the calif. gold fields 
early on the first in 1849 then about 1851 to take a load of apples down he sold 
them for $1.50 each later he another trip and gave his brother a grub stake 
the family never heard from him again. then the last in the 1880s with cattle 
for a cousin.  All this after traveling from PA to Mo. To Oregon in 1843. I 
guess he didn't mind the travel to do that much.
6 months wow - long time from home.
I wonder if they made this a part of normal life ?
