Candi,

I will be going to the Portland, Oregon Library later on this week and would be willing to look up the obits in the Oregonian and can email you a scan copy of what I find. Please advise if this is OK.

To GFO Listers and to Candi: These are the responses so far.

They are my cousins, born in Chicago. let me check--I got their deaths from the OR death index--from an RAOGK up there, but I cannot get an obit from the library without paying $15.00 each. OUCH.

I do this for free for folks, so i hate to pay myself. tight.

Lawrence Charles Maise b IL died June 19, 1974 in Portland

wife Bernadette Berna O'Neal b Il died February 12, 1980 Multnomah County, Oregon

son Lawrence Thomas Maise died October 25, 1981in Multnomah County, Oregon

I feel quite certain they were all related to my mathew maise, b IL, and if I could just get an obit, I could verify that and find some more descendants for my cousin Doug Maise.

I haven't researched much in OR, and I need to know how to do this!

Thanks if you can suggest something.

Regards, Candi in CA

That is easy They are indexed at the main Portland library, also the
index has been micro filmed and I think there is a copy at the Forum.
I have one here so will go and look and see if I can find any one of
that name listed and get back to you. Of course not all Obits were
indexed if they were news items they may have been missed.

Unfortunately, the Portland papers, like many larger cities, don't carry
obits of other than well known people. BUT, most deaths are included in the
Death & Funeral notices section which is at the beginning of the classifieds.
Of course, you need a death death to begin with because they are not included
in the index referred to above.

As Dave mentioned, full names and some dates might be helpful. At least then
the Oregon Death Index can be checked for dates & places.

The above referred to index only includes names found in county or state records. There are NO newspapers at the Oregon State Archives.

Howdy,

I thought I would throw my 2 cents worth in the pot!

There were aprox 30 people in Chicago alone on the
1930 census with the last name of Maise. There were
other people in IL in 1930 with that last name,
outside Chicago.

I searched OR on the 1930 census and there was
only just one Maise and it was Mary Maise who was
listed as a mother-in-law to the head of house she was
living with and his family. The wife of that head of
house would then be Mary Maise' daughter Alice. The
last name of that family she was with was VanFleet.

Mary was listed as 68 years old and widowed on the
1930 census and was listed as born in Wisc. Her
parents were born in France.

Maybe other people with the last name of Maise
moved to OR after 1930 possibly? Maybe there last name
got mispelled when they came here? There is not one
single solitary Maise in the OR death index.

Is this Mary connected in any way possibly?

 Hi,

I made a couple boo boos! I said in my previous
message that there was only one Maise on the 1930
census but there were actually two. A Joseph Maise
from Italy lived in Klamath Falls in 1930.

The other boo boo was that there were three people
with the last name Maise in the OR Death index. I said
before that there were none. I'm slipping! Sorry.

There was a Lawrence Maise in the Soc Sec Death
index who died in Portland who got his Soc Sec
application originally from IL. He died in 1974. Maybe
he is related somehow?

I'm not sure if the name she is searching has the 'S' on the end, or she's
using it in the plural. There are no MAISES deaths in the Oregon Death Index,
but I do find three entries for MAISE --

Name: Maise, Bernadett Mar
County: Multnomah
Death Date: 12 Feb 1980
Certificate: 80-03259
Birth Date: 17 May 1899
Spouse: Lawren

Name: Maise, Lawrence Cha
County: Multnomah
Death Date: 19 Jun 1974
Certificate: 74-09664
Birth Date: - Feb 1900
Spouse: Bernad

Name: Maise, Lawrence Tho
County: Multnomah
Death Date: 25 Oct 1981
Certificate: 81-17788
Birth Date: 09 Nov 1928
Spouse: Martha

Though there may not be a full obituary, there should be a death or funeral
notice. The newspaper index covers only the full obituaries, the notices aren't
indexed. This should give her a starting place, if this is family she's
searching.
