There is an interesting article today (July 12, 2004) in the Mail Tribune,
Medford entitled "O. C. Applegate had a colorful Oregon Career". Capt.
Oliver Cromwell Applegate's Oregon connection afforded him northing short of
celebrity status. He was revered in the early 20th century as a man who
lived and breathed history.
His unofficial title as "the last of the covered wagon generation" garnered
him many an invitation from all over state state ... Photos and movie film
in the collection of the Southern Oregon Historical Society show he well
looked the pioneer part, dressed in buckskin, long flowing white hair and
beard. No doubt he met the public's expectation of what a pioneer ought to
look like. As it turns out there was more to O. C. Applegate (1845-1938)
than looking the part.
I checked the Mail Tribune on-line newspaper to see if the article was on
line so I could provide a link for anyone interested but it's not there. I
would be happy to copy the article if there are descendants who are
interested.
