Jim;

I see your trouble, your people mostly hid from the Census Takers. No
Cummings in Arizona in 1870, I tried Joseph to circumvent the possibility it
was Cummins or some such, same way trying to trace Joseph in 1900 and 1910,
I didn't try 1920. Oregon State Archives is blank for Joseph and Thomas.

Google mostly I find the only relevant citations are about some guy named
Jim Cummings who has posted queries all over the place. You sure have tried
hard.

Is ther any chance your Joseph was a soldier?

July 25, 1863: As part of the Canyon de Chelly Campaign, Kit Carson decides
to force the Navajos to surrender by destroying their food supply. He orders
Major Joseph Cummings to proceed along the Bonito River, and to seize all
livestock and crops. Anything he cannot haul way, is burned.

Also there are other numerous references to Joseph Cummings, the
revolutionary war hero, whose grandson was in the Confederate army. The
grandson did himself in though so probably not your line. There is also a
listing for a Joseph Cummings born in Arizona in 1924, is he family?

I don't think there is anything relevant but there is a long discussion of
that Surname at;

In Tennessee in 1860 I looked at all the heads of household I thought were
likely to have a 17 year old with them and came up blank, so either his
family has moved on or he is with a sibling or other relative. I didn't look
at all 61 heads of household, just the ones over 35, and found some near
misses;

in the CUMMINGS JOSEPH SR 58 M W VA TN VAN BUREN SPENCER 1860
household there is a;

Joseph Jr. aged 22 b Tenn,

in CUMMINGS  G P  47  M  W  TN  TN  WARREN  MCMINVILLE  1860
  is a Joseph apparently aged 11 though it could be a 17 who is out of
order, b. Tenn

I thought I had another one, but it was a John. I am going to paste in the
1880 census just for the benefit of anyone on the list who might want to
pursue this further. I guess you should be gratefull they at least were in
that one!

Before I forget I find in Oregon Geographic Names that Indian Valley is now
called Elgin, although Indian Valley PO was actually two or three miles
above Elgin.

Joseph Cummings and gggrandmother's name was Elizabeth Tucker Cummings, he
was 37 and she was 36. Sorry about the mishap. Jim
