I have heaard the same thing Carla, I don't know that this means anything,
but chekcing Missouri census for 1880 I found over 1400 folks born between
1860 & 1880 named Jesse, I don't know how many caouse I quit counting at
1400 and most of them were not Jesse James, I only found a dozen or so even
listed as Jesse J. most were some other letter or name.

PS if you go to the link I posted last night about the James Gang you will
see that they are STILL popular.

I was told by an old man who grew up in the rural midwest that there was a
lot of admiration and support for the James gang amongst the rural
population.  He said that quite a number of babies were given the first name
Jesse and the middle name James because of this.

Wonder if this is statistically true?!
