He Gene - I too remember the horsedrawn wagons. My favorite was the fruit and
vegetable wagon although we didn't purchase very much during the '30's. After
moving to Parkrose in 1941 we didn't see the wagons as it was out in the
country at that time and we raised our own veggies and my grandparents, living
next door had fruit trees. It would have been the most logical way to peddle
different products as the farmers came in to Portland with their buggies full of
goodies from the farms. Money for trucks and gas was very scarec. There were
some wagons still, during the war due to rationing of gas and tires.

Oh for the good old days! Life was simpler back then - at least it was for us
kids. :-)

To Carroll:

We left Oregon in 1935. Last time there to visit was about 1975 when not
interested in genealogy. My step
grandfather Smith was there in 1912, and worked the
Oregon shipyards both WW's. He died in Portland in
1949 and my grandmother there in the fall of 1954.
When I left, the rag man, the ice man, and the fish
man all had horse drawn wagons. The fish man had
a hearse painted white but it still and its leaded flower
design side windows. There use to be one like it,
down near Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA, circa 1940-
56. Strangely enough in SF in 1935-36 the still had
horse drawn water wagons and street cleaners.
