[or-roots] Re: Which Family tree Maker is best??

Well, having used them all, beginning with version 1.x, here are my recommendations. I bought dozens of
CDs of various kinds, and I view the whole thing as a Barbie Doll. For those of you deficient in the
Barbie culture, suffice to say that that $15 Barbie doll needs clothes. . . , lots of clothes. . . , and a
new house. . . , and a new car. . . and a spa. . . . So, $250 later, your little darling daughter is
happy for maybe three weeks. . . until Barbie needs a . . . .

Get the most up to date version you can afford. That's 11 now, I believe. The ease of use for the newer
versions makes it worthwhile.

All the information on the CDs is available on the Genealogy.com website, and I'd save my shekels to get a
subscription to that. I haven't looked at the CD's for a very long time; I quit buying them, because of
the ease of looking up the same information on the internet. I guarantee that you will want something
more up-to-date than whatever you are looking at on the CDs.

Good luck,

Pat (in Tucson)

First, thanks for all the information and entertainment this list brings. I've been "lurking" for a year
or so, and especially enjoy the little tips, links and websites.

I'm going to start getting serious about this hobby, and have been looking at the Family Tree software on
Ebay. There are so many versions, some with accompanying CDs, and I would really appreciate
recommendations. Are the newer versions different or truly superior, or should I go for an older version
that has more of the CD reference guides (I'm leaning that direction currently, as I am trying to avoid
the subscriptions seemingly required for access to a lot of the databases). Help!
