Subject: [or-roots] Homestead of George Charles Gillespie
Can anyone help me with information on this part of Oregon. The following
is a copied section of concern by three cousins one in California, one in
Texas and one in Oregon.
Please post to poppy or poppy3dr at charter.net
During my genealogy search, I have learned that my great grandfather,
George
C. Gillespie, came to Oregon from Scotland in the 1850's & married my great
grandmother, Angeline Jackson, at Yamhill in 1860.
In the 1870's, George had what he described in notes & a sketch, a
"homestead" 12 miles from La Grande on the Grand Ronde river. He & his
family
were permanently driven from this land by Indians in 1877 - so if it was a
homestead he never obtained full title.
Enclosed is a black & white copy of a crayon sketch he made of his
"homestead" with a note on the back written by my mother many years ago:
This
picture was drawn by grandpa Gillespie of his home on the Grande round River
12 miles from Lagrande. In 1877 the Indians drove the family from this home"
I'm not sure it was a homestead, & I don't know which direction it was from
La Grande. The greenery may indicate that it was to the west. I've
postulated
three possible areas from the description: the area around Cove; the area
around
Imbler; the area around Kamela. Any suggestions you would have in locating
the
property would be appreciated.
I wrote to your Vale office asking about it. They found no land claim
records, but suggested I go to the Portland office Public Room & ask your
help
in looking for it.
If this is a reasonable approach, is there any day of the week - or time of
day which would be preferable from your standpoint? I am quite flexible as
to
timing.
