My cousin was 2nd in command of a LST sent from Hawaii to
the Phillipines. The squadron was in a typhoon for 3 days,
and wound up several hundred miles off course. The records
show some men actually repaired engines while in the worst
part of that storm.

My husband was on a LST during that hurricane. That must have been some storm from the way he talked and the way you tell it.

One time coming back from Hawaii we were in a storm taking 40 degree rolls. We were sitting in the boat shop some on a wall bench made of 1/4 in stell and loaded with engine parts.. Three of us were leaning against and engine with our ft. against the bench when it broke loose from the wall. A friend of mine and me were on the outside and jumped clear as the bench hit the engine a new kid who had just came aboard was caught in the middle and squashed down to about 4 in. We pulled him out as the ship rolled back and just in time as the bench rolled over and cut every thing to the block of the engine.. Had we not pulled him clear he would have come out in 2 pieces.
He was passed over to an APA that was faster than us and they took him into San Diego a couple of days before we got there. I never saw or heard of him again always wondered what happened to him.
On that same trip a D-8 Cat broke loose in the well deck and they had to used big timbers to get it wedged against one side before going down and securing it to the deck.
Yep its a hard life out on those boats. many a Sailor has learned that the hard way.
