I take a big brown envelope that will hold an 8x14 inch piece of paper.
I seal it up, then take a pair of scissors and cut along one of the long
edges (14 inch side) to open up the envelope. The envelope is now closed on 3
sides and open at the top (side) as it is filed in the filing cabinet. I then
write on the front of the envelope the name of the male and female heads of the
household. I file all information on that family in that envelope including
all information on their children. If one of the children is my direct
ancestor then that child gets his or her own envelope for their family.
It works pretty well.
