I have a number of high school and two AAU track photos that I would like to pass on to those people who might be related to someone in them. They are black and white originals used in the Oregonian.
The newspaper captions placed on the back of the photos are as follows:
May 19 1944
Tightest finish of Thursday's city track and field championship qualifying at Jefferson came in the first heat of the 100 yard dash, where Al Barlow, Commerce, far left, was judged a winner over Dick Parker of Washington, far right, in 10.5. Others shown are Schira, second from left, of Jeff and King of Franklin, both unplaced.
May 23 1945
Grant's Roland Curtis skims over the last hurdle and races for the tape at Franklin's bowl Tuesday afternoon to start the Generals off with a win in the high hurdles, first event on the program of the annual city meet, which Grant won with ease. In the foreground is Portwood, Benson, who placed second.
April 1946
Washington's Bob Maxwell (above) pitches headlong on his face at Jefferson Friday afternoon after tripping just as he attempts to pass the baton to a teammate in the two mile relay event of the annual city relays. Jefferson won the event but Grant the meet.
March 27 1948
The weather wasn't exactly spring like Friday, but Portland prep trackmen opened their season, just the same. In these two pictures Emery Barnes (above) clears the high jump bar at 5 feet 5 inches.....and Jack Coy (left) broad jumps 18 feet 73/4 inches. Both are members of the Jefferson High School relay team, which defeated Washington and Lincoln squads. (The photo only shows the high jumper.)
April 15 1950
Franklin looks off to the races in the mile relay here, but a split second after the Oregonian Cameraman Allan DeLay snapped the shot, the baton flew out of control. John McCamant, taking the pass, and Radar Heller, passing are the Quakers who figured in the mishap, on the first exchange. Franklin had a 20 yard lead, then lost the advantage, but managed to finish second behind Jefferson in this race in the annual city relays Friday at Roosevelt. Grant won the meet.
June 2 1950
Ted Waterworth of Portland's Washington High School (second from left) won the 120 year high-hurdle event in the championship division of the Oregon AAU track meet at Jefferson High School Saturday night. Albert Walker of OSC (extreme left) finished second and Bill Sorsby, Oregon frosh (extreme right), third.
Lou Lofland of Roosevelt (extreme left) breaks the twine to win the 200-yard dash Thursday in the city track meet at Roosevelt. From left are Lofland; Loren Gluth of Jefferson, who finished third; Lincoln's Ray Scales, second; Jim Lowe of Benson and Dick Carter of Grant, both out of the running; and Morris Overstreet, fifth, Lofland won in the time of :22.9.
June 1950
Lloyd LaBeach, Jamaican star, beats the University of Oregon's Bill Fell in the 100 yard dash at the Oregon AAU track and field championships at Jefferson high Saturday. Time was :9.6.
