Regarding the 1539 patients who died between 1883 and 1913, I disagree that
all were lost. Here is a message post sorry I did not note the source. My
Van and Thirza McCullough's cremains were place here. I hired Connie Lenzen,

And she located the vault number where they are buried. A book has been
published with this information, sorry again I did not source this but have
it in by correspondance with Connie somewhere.
The Asylum Cemetery was located on the grounds of the Oregon State Insane
Asylum in Salem, Oregon. It began with the opening of the state hospital
for the insane in the Fall of 1883. Some patients were transferred from
the Hawthorne Asylum in Portland by train. If a patient died while in the
care of the hospital, attempts were made to contact the family for burial.
If
the body was not claimed for burial elsewhere, the patient was buried in
the Asylum Cemetery. In 1913 the cemetery was destroyed and all grave
remains were cremated. The ashes remained in a basement at the hospital
until
1976 when they were removed and buried at what is now known as Memorial
Circle on the grounds of the State Hospital, which is still being used
today in the same building on Center Street in Salem.
Asylums were not in every city, and it was expensive
to come to Portland, get a body enbalmed, buy the
casket, and arrange transportation. And keep in mind
that 100 years ago, the country was in a severe
recession, and money was tight. Likely, most of the
families were broke, after providing institutional
care for a relative. (The same problem as today.)
Hope this helps someone.
Susie

And good luck. This only applies to patients who died after 1913. The ashes
of 1539 patients who died at the hospital between 1883 and 1913 have been
lost.
