[or-roots] Hamburger Stand

On the right side of Foster Road, as I
reacll it, at the top of the hill just before the
street angled to the left and went down hill for a
ways, was a lumber yard that used to provide wood
for the winter.

It was fun in the thirties to watch the old
Mack chain driven, hard rubber tired trucks
making their deliveries.

I was told by my aunt, a resident at the time
that the whole yard burned during WWII.

Also does anyone recall the Oregon shipyard
Fire 1943 - 44. My grandfather and uncle
were both employed there. My uncle had not
left when my grandfather called to tell us the
about the fire. The three of us sat on a hill
adjacent to the yards and watched as they cut
at least one ship loose to save it. When I got
back to Oakland, it was on the local news
reel at the theater.

Out in that area, I rcall a highschool was on the right
on a hill, and had a large lawn with light posts also
a Hienz? factory on the left.

Some time around 1930-32 I am told a local bank
manager and his secretary absconded with funds.
They drove a Lincoln auto into the river. Later
he or both were found in South America. One
possibly committed suicide. My father purchased
that Lincoln just before being exposed to monoxide
poisoning at the Francis Motor Car Co. The car was
stored at Mrs. Russell's house garage on S.E. 68th
Ave. Portland. During father's illness, the car deter-
iorated. I recall Mrs. Russell opening the garage so
that I could see the car. All I can recall now is that
it had large headlights and chrome radiator, but smelled
of wood rot. I was silver gray in color.

Another story, of earlier time is that of prominent Portland
Dentist, who killed his wife's lover. He was convicted of
murder about 1922. I have a photo of my father who was
selling news papers, but the headline is too blurred to
make out the Dentist's name. The story was in one of
the magazines about 1950.

Compared to some on this list I am a baby but when I went to Grant High School in Portland (63-67) I use to catch the bus at 42nd and Sandy Boulevard to go home. While waiting there I would go into the Hamburger Stand located on this corner to eat something.

Since moving back to Oregon from traveling around the world I went back there and the place is still in business and still serving greasy burgers.

I am not sure when they originally open but when I was last there the place look just like it was when I was in high school.
