That Winter of 1949/50 while at the Un. of Portland, there was a band play off, If
I am not mistaken, between Bob Crosby and the Monte Balieu dixieland band.

Also at UP we found huge foot prints the ringed the school. Turned out to be
the school paper's editor who had found some surplus boots and had gone out
walking in the snow. These boots were white, with extremely heavy soles,
quite large and said to be surplus from Alaska. Any way they kept his feet
warm in the snow.

When I arrived in Portland in Sept. of 1949, you could smell the pies baking.

I certainly remember both Dell's in Medford and the Quality Pie Shop in Portland on 23rd. I was a student at the hospital across the street, which was then Good Samaritan, in the early 1950's and the pie shop was our haven when the meals in the hospital cafeteria became too boring to contemplate. Dells in Medford was a special treat if I had been good when I was a child in the 30's and early 40's. Dad worked for my grandmother at the Merrick Motor Inn on the east side of Riverside at 6th, so he ate lunch at Dells quite often. Also Dad ran a dance hall across the street (Main) from the theater. Was it the Roxy or Roxy Ann? I know I saw Gone With the Wind there in the 40's.
