  Yes, I had thought of that one, but the coincidence of his cousin having the same span of years between his children sparked my curiousity.  I thought that was too much of a coincidence, but then I also don't know what happened to the mother.  Maybe she died when she had her last child (my great, great grandmother).  I found the family living in Iowa in the 1850 census and the wife was alive and the last child hadn't been born yet.  Then I found them living in Oregon in the 1860 census with a step mother.  There is quite a bit about her in the Donation Land Claim records.  It said she went through a contentious divorce with her first husband and got the land that they homesteaded.  I have not been able to find them in any 1870 census and I think the father was dead by 1880 but not positive.  I also would like to find a marriage record if I could as they had to have gotten married in Oregon.  The father's name was Samuel Deford and the step-mother's name was Lucintha Jane Stillwell Horner.

  There are any number of reasons as to why the years between births, my brother and I had a 12 year difference,

  our mother had several miscarriages before I was born.
