What a nice idea.  Thank you.  I was at that library a year ago and
didn't think to try looking in the newspapers.  That is where I found
the city directory of 1918 that had Venus (Jean) living with Noah's
brother Jesse Hardwick.  Of course it didn't mention the kids, just
Jesse and Jean.

It is true that early OR Deaths/Births were rather sporadically
reported. 
It seems like they were suppose to begin records in 1903 but it wasn't 
strictly enforced it seems.  On the other hand, some counties have
records 
that go back into the 1880's and earlier but they aren't complete.

There is an index at the Multnomah County Library (downtown Portland) to
the 
newspapers that is sometimes helpful in locating small snatches of 
information.  Perhaps someone on the list visits there and could check
for 
you for Hardwick.

How kind of you to do that.  I have pretty much decided that she did die
in Oregon but that it was before they recorded deaths.  The next thing I
am going to try is go to the cemeteries where I know other relatives are
buried and look for her there.  Maybe I will get lucky.

Somewhere during this interchange someone suggested that maybe Verna
died in
Washington.  I was in Olympia today and took a look at the Washington
state
death index 1910 - 1919, but found no Verna Hardwick.

I have only been on the list a few days and I think I know why some
people
are dropping.  Maybe they are new like me and haven't seen anything yet
related to genealogy.
I will try to do a query and I hope someone out there can help me.  I am
trying to find a death record for a child named Verna Marie Hardwick.  I
think she died sometime between 1915 and 1919.
