On the right hand side of every Excel spreadsheet is a "scroll bar" with
an up-arrow at the top and a down arrow at the bottom.  Just above the
up-arrow at the top of the scroll bar is a short horizontal bar, about 1/8
of an inch thick, and only as wide as the width of the scroll bar.  If you
put your cursor on top of that small bar and pull it down the scroll bar,
a horizontal line clear across the spread sheet will follow you down the
page.  Everything above that line will be frozen; everything below will
still be "scroll-able."  If you stop so the bar is just below the two or
three lines at the top of the page that contain the column headings, you
can work way down the table and still see which column is which.

The same process works for saving headings in the rows.  At the very
bottom of the right hand scroll bar, just below the down arrow, is a small
white box.  On the left hand side of that box is a vertical bar, of the
same size as the one up at the top of the up-arrow.  Use your cursor to
pull that bar to the left and a vertical line will follow you clear across
the page.  When you stop over near one or two of the columns on the left
hand side of the worksheet, everything on the left of the vertical line
will be frozen.  Now you can move way off to the right and work on those
cells and the contents of Columns A or B will be frozen.
