Joyce;

I am not sure where your problem is so will run through this from GLO hoome
page;

http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/

On that page right under the haeding;
Bureau of Land Management - General Land Office Records

under that heading is a dark green bar on the left end of which it says;
"Land Paten Search" this will take you to;

http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/

which has a index card appearance image in the middle of the screen where it
asks for Last Name "required" [the required means that without a last name
no answer will be given, another words if you looking for Alphonse Smith and
you think you want to try for all Alphonses, no dice, you have to enter a
surname, but if you want all the Smiths in Oregon you can skip the Alphonse,
though with common names like that I wouldn't recommend it, I just tried
Chapman and got eight pages worth.

With less commong surnames I would definitely recommend just entering the
surnam as you might find variations on given name you wouldn't expect. My
Grandfather Chapman was Francis Marion, but he used Frank M on the homestead
app.

when you find your person you will again get a page of index card looking
things which have varying bits of information about the patent,
patent description is fairly self explanatory, Legal Land description is
the algebraic land grid gobbledy gook we surveyors use to identify each
unique parcel of land in as confusing a way as we possibly can thereby
guarunteeing our continued employment, document image will give you a
digital image of the patent if they have one, I was surprised to not Grandma
Minnie had a patent when skimming the Chappies, but checked and I already
had downloaded it. Certified copy is where you can order a analog copy
[paper for those who don't speak nerdese] of the patent. I suspect this may
be where you need to go if you are looking for the details about homestead
patents that some folks have mentioned, the things like when the individual
entered the state and so forth aren't posted at the web site.

Hope this helps.

I don't find anything on the site where it gives personal information. Can
someone guide me around so we can all find it? Thanks! Joyce
