I have found the same problem with trying to read the microfilm - too much to read and not enough time! My suggestions are to contact the local historical society for the county where the newspapers were printed - in this case, the Knight library would be fine. Ask then if someone has put together an obituary index for their paper(s). Then you can go directly to the date you need to find. I was very surprised to learn someone had done this for the Coos Bay papers. The index hadn't made their collection as yet because it's original cataloging. I also found that the Alice Woolridge, a Coos county historian, donated all of her obituaries to the Oregon Genealogical society and in 1982 this information was summarized into a new volume. I looked at it this weekend at the Oregon Historical Society library. If you only know the date, I'd start by looking at dates within 3 -4 weeks after your death date. Before the date you might find a mention that they were ill.

 I requested micro-film from the Knight Library, Eugene, OR. for Oregon Statesman newspapers the years 1852 (when my McCubbins line came to Marion Co., OR and 1877 the year my ggg-Grandfather James McCubbins died. I went to the Library this am & searched & searched &  >>>>. I realize it's not easy finding what you want, but does any one have a clue on how to approach / search better in these reels of microfilm as I have 6 to go through & the library keeps them on hand for 2 weeks. What I'm desperately still trying to find is hopefully & it's a long shot, an Obit. on my ggg-Grandfather James McCubbins who died Sept. 6, 1877 North Salem, Marion Co., OR.  Searching for Obit & his grave & getting no where fast. I think in all the searching I did this am I only found one Obit for someone else.
