Thanks, Les
Now, all I have to do is copy the instructions out, put them in some safe place, and try to remember where
they are the next time someone asks about a particular DLC <G>. Oh, and thanks for offering to "fix the
link" with OU. I am webmaster for a website and really appreciate it when people tell me of broken links
-- it's hard to keep up.

|Pat;
|
|Looks pretty good, but I already knew how to get there, just a
|couple of things; I didn't understand at first what you meant
|by quadrant, you might want to substitute "section of state
|map" or some other ponderous term, though I don't think it is
|really necessary as what you mean sort of jumps out of the
|page at you if you try to use it.
|
|I believe the FYI link is now;
|
|http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/what_we_have/GLO_survey_plats/home.html
|
|Oh, I will advise U of O web dude about link.
|
|also, I assume you are talking about viewing them in XP's
|window and fax viewer, which is really a pretty good way to do
|it if you don't want to alter the image in any way, I made a
|discovery tonight, I had been using the magnifying icon at
|bototm of screen to zoom in and out, but I have another
|program called usa Photo maps that uses the plus and minus key
|and I discovered it works the same way in windows fax and foto
|viewer, and the big plus is the plus and minus keys work much
|faster than the magnifying glass which is one of the things I
|hated about using it was it zooms so slow.

|OK, for those of you who caught the error in the names of the
|file, my bad! I had copied one incorrectly. Should be the
|same file you select!

|
|One of our group asked me to put in a step-by-step on the
|early township maps from the University of Oregon website. I
|have had some challenges with this myself, so putting it in
|steps will help me too.
|
|So, here goes. I hope someone will test this out and let's
|fine tune it. I know these aren't the only zippered files we
|find and they are always a challenge.
|
|Now, to help here, starting off, I am running Windows XP Pro,
|with a copy of WinZip. I have "file extensions" showing as a
|default in my Windows Explorer, so I can see what kind of files I have.
|
|Also, when I searched, or rather tried to link around in the
|OU Library website, to get the "maps home", I had a great deal
|of difficulty finding these maps. They need to check their
|site mapping!
|
|Now, onward.
|
|These are large JPEG images in .zip files (1-2.5MB). So the
|whole process takes awhile.
|
|We will use the "save" rather than "open" method as it is like
|practicing safe sex, you never know what viruses are out there.
|
|(1) Make a folder on your drive, called "Downloads" or
|something like that.
|
|(2) You will also want a folder called "GenealogyMaps" or something.
|
|This is from: http://libweb.uoregon.edu/map/index.html but as
|noted, I find it impossible to find my way to the maps from there.
|
|(3) So, in your browser, migrate to:
|
|http://libweb.uoregon.edu/map/GIS/Data/Oregon/GLO_home.htm
|
|This gives you the entire state to choose from. (note: the FYI
|http://www.library.sos.state.il.us/library. . . is a dead
|link. This information could not be found anywhere on the
|Illinois SOS site.)
|
|(4) From this page, select the quadrant you want. Float the
|cursor over the map, the townships in each quadrant will pop up.
|
|(5) Left click on a quadrant.
|
|For this example, we will use quadrant 3, Roseburg to Medford.
|That's where some of the ancestors settled.
|
|(6) Select 27s07w1863.zip Choice of Open/Save/Cancel
|
|(7) Choose "Save" On my computer, the default "save to" is
|"desktop." Maneuver to your "Downloads" folder. Click to save.
|
|(8) The file will download. Then you get a popup saying
|Open/OpenFolder/Close.
|
|(9) Select "Open Folder"
|
|You should see 27s06w1862.zip
|
|(10) Double click on the file. This will unpack the file and
|it will show a "picture" icon instead of the zipper folder. If
|you look at the details screen, it will indicate that it is a
|JPEG image.
|
|(11) Open the file using your regular viewing software. (I use
|the regular Windows viewer) You will find out (in Section 8)
|that my ancestor's land is not identified here. Dang.
|
|(12) You can leave the image in the folder, or save elsewhere
|as a JPEG.
|
|I find it easier to download/save all the files I want in a
|particular quadrant, in a session, then go back to Windows
|Explorer and unzip/unpack them and look at them at one
|sitting, rather than switching back and forth. I also take at
|least one township on each of the four sides of the "township
|of interest" because I'm always finding other "families of
|interest" that way.
|
|Now, I'd really appreciate some feedback on this. What kind of
|cleaning up does it need, etc.
|
|Thanks, Pat
