[or-roots] Dr Irvine and Lebanon History & Dr. Ralph E. Herron

I remember many stories my Grandma told me of just this subject. Of the
eight children she gave birth to, only 1 was born in a hospital and that
was in 1951. My aunt was born in the middle of a bridge near
Winchester, Oregon.

I think she was telling the truth too, but my cousin is so
stubborn and she doesn't remember how different things were even back in
the 50s. I lived in a small town and we didn't have supermarkets. A
store was just a small room that had a counter that a man stood behind
and the shelves with the food on them were also behind the counter. You
would hand him a list and he would pull your groceries and you either
paid with money or he would write it down in a book and bill you later.
She doesn't believe me, but I remember going to that store for my mom to
get a loaf of bread many many times.

P.S. That was about 1944 in Los Angeles, which was a fair sized
town then.

	Dear Dale,

If your grandmother said she gave birth in a store, I would be
inclined to believe her. You never know when the childbirth is coming,
and it may have come to quickly for her to even be able to get to
doctor/hospital/home which ever place they delivered back then. My dad
was born at home on a farm in Friend Oregon in 1920.
With my situation, however, they took their beloved time getting
here, even at the hospital.

	Sincerely

	Karla Williams
