Hi Mary,
There was a Mary Bilyeu born to David Porter Bilyeu and Malinda F.
Crabtree. I believe she may be the one you are seeking. David Porter
Bilyeu's father was John L. Bilyeu, b. about 1824 in Tennessee, and his
father was Peter Bilyeu. Does this sound like your Bilyeu family?
Also, there was a John A. Gilkey, born in Maine, married to Christine
(unknown). They are listed in the 1930 Census, Corvallis, Benton
County, Oregon. Listed with them are two grown, unmarried daughters,
Helen and Beulah. Because of the ages given, I don't think Christine
was the mother. Both daughters were listed as born in Washington
State. So I think this is part of your Gilkey family. Can you confirm
this for me?
Helen became a renowned botanist, earning degrees from Oregon
Agriculture College, Corvallis (now OSU) and University of California,
Berkley. She was associated with OSU for many years as professor and
curator. My dad used to write to her, asking her expertise in
identifying plants that he was unsure of. Though he was strictly an
amateur, self taught botanist, she seemed always happy to correspond
with him on their favorite subject.
