Remember, it is not just veteran's groups who place flags in cemeteries -
Scout groups - Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, do as well. I am on the board of
directors of Lee Mission Cemetery here in Salem, and we have a Girl Scout troop
that has placed flags for us for years. They also place another set of unique
flags for us - Christian flags. Our cemetery, having begun with the burial
of early Salem Methodist missionaries, includes the graves of about 100
ministers - of all denominations - so their graves are also marked each Memorial
Day. Along with the 100 or so veteran's graves that have an American flag.

It's a beautiful site to see all these flags flapping in the breeze.

We are having a special event on Sunday, June 18th, to mark the centennial
of the re interment of Reverend Jason Lee, from Canada (where it died) to the
Lee Mission Cemetery. It's at 2:00 p.m. at the cemetery. Great time to come
and see all the flags too, as the Girl Scouts will put them all out for us once
again. You can read more about the event at:

(http://www.oregonpioneers.com/marion/LeeCem.htm) . Click on site map and then the Jason Lee Centennial.
Everyone is welcome to attend. Mimi Stang
