Oregon Archives Week Celebrated around the State

October 7 -15 events will be held around the state to mark the
observation of Archives Week in Oregon.

Benton County Historical Museum in Philomath (on Main Street) will host
an "Ask and Archivist" session.  Bring your diaries, photographs,
home movies, scrapbooks, or other documentary materials to the Benton
County Historical Museum on Sunday afternoon, October 8th between 1 and
3 pm.
Archivists from repositories throughout the Willamette Valley will be
available to help you identify items and/or advise about storage and
preservation of the materials.  You are invited to bring bound materials
such as diaries or scrapbooks; individual items like letters,
certificates, diplomas, or maps; sound recordings; or visual materials
such as photographs, motion picture films, or videotapes to the event. 
No monetary appraisals will be made. 
The "Ask an Archivist" event will be followed at 3:15 by a
reception and lecture on the "Utopian Communities in Oregon" by
James J. Kopp, Director of the Watzek Library at Lewis and Clark
College.


Southern Oregon University in Ashland will host a reception and
lectures on Oct 14 at the Hannon Library on campus
Beginning at 3:00.  Forest Historian/Archeologist, Jeff LaLande will
speak on  "100 Years of Forest History:  The Historical Records
Collection of the Rogue River National Forest"

At 4:15 Alan Armstrong, guest Dramturg will speak on "Staging
Shakespeare's King John" one of the plays featured at this year's
Oregon Shakespeare Festival. 
Attendees can also view exhibits on the 2nd floor of the library
including the Second Folio. 

Sunday October 15th from 11:30 there will be a reception and open house
at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's New Theatre, which will include
viewing of the First Folio on loan from the Paul Allan Family
foundation.  At 1:00 in Carpenter Hall, Paul Merchant, a Shakespeare
scholar and professor at Lewis and Clark College, will speak about the
Folio and his research in England and at the Folger Library in
Washington, D. C. 

Other events include: 

Oregon Historical Society will present a workshop on "Preserving Your
Family Archives" on the morning of October 10th

Oregon State University Archives will present historical films from
their collection at noon in the Willamette rooms of Valley Library on
Oct 9th, 11th, and 13th

Posters highlighting the programs of Archival repositories through out
the state will be will be displayed in the Capitol building in Salem
through October.
