Bless you Beth, I had not looked at that. I am sure your analysis is correct
especially since Sue informs us that my Cynthia who died in Portland is not
the one that Alan and Pam are looking for.

I believe I found Bert in the 1910 Census, but the page was nearly illegible
and when I went back to 1900 in CG I couldn't find a Wiliam Hayes with
parents to figure out how old Bert should be [he was 41 in the census I
found] so I gave up.

Okay watch me spin, maybe not however, since the Tidewater Hayes is
"probably" buried in 1940, I went looking for him, I find one Hayes of the
right age range in Lincoln Co in 1920, One Herbert Hayes age 45, wife Lydia
(sp?) age 29, [maybe second wife???] children Marion 10, Herbert 4 and
Dorothy 2 they are in Nashville precinct. Where the heck is that??

Oh treacherous memory, I am sure I HAVE heard of it, though I don't think
I've ever been there? Well maybe when I worked for the FS in Alsea.

it is about a mile due north of Ellmaker State park as a hand reference pt
on highway 20, or if you follow the rail line west from Blodgett about two
miles will get you there.

Well duh, I just back checked for Pam and Alan's more detailed query;
>
Looking for info on my G.G Grandfather Colbert Hayes d.o.b. Sept.6, 1826
married to Cynthia Godwin Dec 29,1847 She was born about 1830. They lived
at Alsea,Or around 1890 +or- 10

So Herbert is not, Colbert, and if the tentative ages on the stone as
transcribed are anywhere near accurate, defintely not the folks
they want.

Alright, now I have something to work with;

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation
Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
Colbert HAYES Self M Male W 53 TN Farmer NC NC

they threw me off by saying the family was in Cottage Grove in 1900, they
are in Springfield in 1900, but I think the assessment of their not being in
the 1910 Census is correct. As a matter of fact I can't even find William
there.

I have to go cook some dinner, the boss is home and I ma out of ideas
anyway.

In this case, I think there's a good chance family legend could be
almost correct. Tidewater is fairly close to Waldport, and if you
follow the link to Tidewater Cemetery
[http://www.rootsweb.com/~orlincol/tidewater.htm], you'll find buried
there "Hayes, Mr. (Bert?)" and "Hayes, Mrs.". The questioned "Bert"
could be Colbert and "Mrs. Hayes" his wife. It seems worth checking
out, and there's cemetery contact info on the page to make that easier.
