Hi -

Cheryl Avgeris is the one I talked with in person when in Medford a week ago on vacation. I was staying at the old homestead in Rogue River, OR. Cheryl didn't know where to go to change the name of a creek she said.
Does the land/creek need to be surveyed before you apply for a name change? I know a family member went in half (payed) with the neighbor next door. I wonder if that survey will be enought to help change the name of creek?

Yes, the Rogue River - According to the USGS, variant and historical names of the Rogue River include: Gold River, La Riviere aux Coquins, Les Coquins, North Fork Rogue River, River Coquin, Trashit, Clamet River, McLeods River, Rouge Clamet River, and Too-to-nez.

The town of Rogue River used to be called Tailholt then Woodville. It was called Tailholt 1st because people had to cross the fast current in the river by holding on to there horse's tail. They did this before the ferry & where the bridge is now.

Thanks, Nancy St. Helens, OR.

Coincidentally I read a passage in HH Bancroft Oregon V2 today about the state leislature having the authority to change a river's name. Apparently they officially changed the name of the Rogue River, but people ignored them and by 1888 the official name was once again Rogue River...

As a footnote, my grat grandmother named a stream near Silk Creek (Lane Co.) "Calico Creek" and after it was surveyed the name took on official status. My best suggestion is talk to the Jackson Co. Recorder - this is the info on their website: 10 S Oakdale Rm 216

  Hi -

Does anyone know how to go about changing the name of a creek in Jackson Co., Oregon? When I was on vacation in Rogue River, OR. we went to the water master, surveyor and county clerk & none of them knew where to go to change the name of a creek. daaaaa how dum can they be. The creek is on family property & been in our family for over 100 years. We have grandfather water rights filed 1901 & updated 1909 with the document that reads we do. The creek was named after the stepfather & not the real father who got the land 1st in 1898.

The water master said no one has water rights in Jackson Co., OR. He is so wrong!

  Thanks, Nancy
