[or-roots] Cattle Brands

Thank you Gerrie;

I have forwarded that to the rest of the genealogy nuts in my Grandfather's
line, I was pretty sure we were registered whether we were in that book or
not. I know the branding iron is still around somewhere. I checked dad's
"book of rememberance" hoping there was something in there, I also have a
book full of notes he made in the last months of his life for posterity's
sake that might have an explanation of the brand, I am sure I have heard
what it meant, maybe F - C or some such?? Seems like it would read "bar C"
something but what I don't know, maybe one of my older sibs will remember.

YUP Les!
Oregon Brands Recorded January 2, 1941 to April, 1942, Page 218:
Space # 15 (HELP! I don't know how to read this brand, but it looks like a
large backwards letter "C" with a horizontal line through it, so that it
looks almost like an "E".
F. W. & C. D. Chapman; Cottage Grove, Lane Co.   (Right) R. face  Sheep &
goats
There is a vertical notch in the left ear & 2 "V" notches at the top of the
right ear.

You know, that backwards "C" makes sense for a Chapman name. I don't know
how to "read" brands though. I'm not in law enforcement, but I don't know
why your ear marks wasn't proof those were your goats! It should have been.

Hey! My late father-in-law would be proud of me for helping you folks! He
really enjoyed his job and visiting with folks and he loved livestock! He
didn't like the book work though. I enjoy looking at the little red book
because I recognize lots of names from different places we have lived in
Oregon. Who would have thought this book would have come in handy to help
people with genealogy? I copied pages from the brand registration book in
La Grande for our family members, and this made a fun, attractive page for
our books. You might try checking to see if the Lane County courthouse has
such a book too.

Gerrie;

I haven't been paying a lot of attention to the cattle brand thread because
I didn't think it would be of more than passing interest to me, but it just
occurred to me that you might have a brand registered for either or both
Francis Marion Chapman or Clare Decker Chapman in Lane county sometime
between 1914 or so and when the book was published, though I can't swear we
had a brand, I know when the goats were being rustled we had no "proof" of
ownership, even when we caught the rustlers red handed with a truck load of
our goats the fact they had our ear marks wasn't "proof."
