Now if I could just figure out whether that is in fact where M. A. Handsaker
is in 1893; I suspect the South Eugene residence is more likely, since as
far as I know the Conants were west of town.

If you Google Lost Valley Oregon 1880 Census you'll get a hit for
Ancestry.com listing District 67 as Lost Valley and Pleasantville Precincts
and District 68 as Springfield Precinct.  My guess is that everyone else
here is correct and it is/was the Lost Valley near Dexter.
