[or-roots] Finding ancestors in Revolutionary and Civil War

Footnote.com has an entire database that has Rev War Pension files as well
as records of service (for those who may not have gotten a pension, died, no
widow, etc.).
IF you know the names, locations at the time of the war, etc., you may be
able to find something.
However, a point. One veteran I researched the other day was born in New
Jersey, but was drafted/volunteered/took the place of another soldier (yes,
all three at different times) while living in New York City.
When he applied for his pension, he was living in Illinois.
But, the usual caveat - work backwards! First you have to find father,
mother, father, mother. . . all the way back to the Rev. War.
Then, with those people, see who may have served.
And, as Dale noted, "serving" didn't just mean fighting. I have ancestors
who were suppliers of goods or provided other services also. Those you won't
find at Footnote, but there are books around with various names in them.
Good luck,
Pat

Just to clarify, being a Quaker did not prevent a lot of men (and women)
from being recognized as Patriots by the DAR and SAR. I have a Quaker
Patriot from North Carolina who supplied flour to the Continental Army and
is therefore deemed a Patriot by the DAR.
