From trisch at charter.net Wed Dec 1 14:04:53 2010 From: trisch at charter.net (Trish Neal) Date: Wed, 1 Dec 2010 14:04:53 -0800 Subject: [or-roots] A.W. Cuthbert - Kamela, Oregon Message-ID: <00e701cb91a3$cbcb5bb0$63621310$@net> I'm searching for descendants of A.W. Cuthbert. I believe his name was Alexander and was born in Scotland. I found census information for a Myrtle Cuthbert in 1910 and Oliver (Olive?) Cuthbert in 1900. They lived in Mountain (I'm assuming that's Mountain View) in Siskiyou County, California. I purchased what I think is a watch fob which has a Masonic log at the top and A.W. Cuthbert, Kamela, Oregon and 1890 engraved on it. I purchased it about 10 years ago on eBay hoping to get it to the family. I happened to find it agin and thought that I would try once again now that I have found what I think is correct info for him. Kamela is located just north of La Grande and was a railroad stop there. I'm assuming that Mr. Cuthbert may have been a railroad worker. Myrtle Cuthbert was born in Oregon in 1890 and Oliver was born in Oregon in 1884. Thanks! Typically what we do is put a file on the disc with the photos that has the known information and the file name, but if you change file names or lose that file; then what? I have recently?received?two batches of photos from late 19th and early 20th century that I am hoping some folks on this list or some list some where will be able to help me with; http://s1118.photobucket.com/albums/k617/Mashtali/Photos%20from%20Caddie/ I am?thinking a lot of these photos are from the Yamhill county, Clackamas county area.?Unfortunately I can't be sure of anything on these photos beyond it is a fairly safe bet they are all taken west of the Rockies. The above link is to the album that is as near as I can reconstruct almost entirely the family of Nicholas Tack Melvin and his wife Zenobia Lyster. You can see from my captions my speculations on who these folks are. I really don't expect much chance of anyone knowing these people, but am hoping someone on this or some list will recognize some of the places.? These people moved around quite a bit. The whole family is in ?the state of Washington in?their?1892 census and I note the page I have saved thereof doesn't list any place info. Nice. in 1900 they are in the Beaver Creek precinct of Clackamas Co. By 1910 they are in West Oregon City precinct which for all I know is the same place, Meanwhile Sophia and the youngest child have both died. By 1920 Uncle Nick is by himself in lodgings in Oregon city, John L and wife are nearby well, in the same precinct. The capper is the household above Uncle Nick in 1920 is the only Ekerson family I find in the 1920 Census in Oregon. I don't see an Art among them though and they are illusive in the 1910 Census.? I have John L and wife in the Gardiner Census in 1930, but have nothing else on them in that census. I do have dates of death for most of the above mentioned people many of them thanks to folks on OR-Roots.. What I don't know is who the extra grandchildren (?) are, the last name of Clare E. wife of John L. and any?Information?on Mary Francis Cassidy wife of Oscar Orvil. The other album at the same site labeled "From Joan" at the above link which should be available to the public is a mixed bag, but I am thinking some of the folks in it are the Milan Morrell Melvin Junior family, most notably I am hoping someone can identify image 55 either as him and his family or who they are. From the way I?received?this album I really can't even say with any certainty that all the photos are from west of the Rockies. On that note I haven't researched the photos that have names per what is posted. I do have the life history of Emma Sherrett which I have actually shared on Or-roots in the past and I have pretty much everything on Anna Melvin and her son Milan, It would be?interesting?to me to find out more about cousin Virgil but I do have the bare facts of her life too. I apologize for such a long post, but then you know to expect that when you see it is from me. Leslie Chapman -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Oliver is listed as a son, but there is a correction to "Olive" without any citation. Wonder about that. As you noted, in 1910, Alexander and Ann are still in Mountain, but with only Myrtle. Two of the six children have died. Curiously, their immigration dates are now listed as 1882 for Alex, 1860 for Ann. There are several trees including Violet, Myrtle, and Oliver. (Understanding "consider the source") We have Violet Ivey marrying Frank Elmer Shimmin in 1905 in Yreka, died in 1912. One child listed, Elmer Richard Shimmin, 1907-1981 (died in Santa Clara). Elmer Richard Shimmin married and has two children. Tracy Crowe follows this family. Oliver Dudley, m 1905 in Hornbrook, Julia Lyletton, d 1909. (the Lyletton family in 1910 or 20 has a Cuthbert grandchild) Child listed as Harold Oliver Cuthbert, b 1906. Harold married Dama G Glynn, one child. If you have access to Ancestry.com, you can find all of these, including the contact information for the various contributors. Looks like we have at least three descendants. I'm curious that the same name would be used for both the first two boys. Interesting. So, I'm pretty sure you can find your family, but just to avoid confusion, by the way, I did find an "A Cuthbert" in Wasco County in 1860. This could be your guy as well. I had info that a friend found for me as I don't currently have access to Ancestry. This is becoming a very small world after reading thru all of this. Hornbrook was also a railroad town and Wasco County, Oregon was also an area for railroad. I recognize the Lyletton family from Hornbrook so I'm wondering if my uncle might remember the family. My Dad grew up in Hornbrook and is buried there. I'll ask my friend to check out the family history info to see if we can lock in on someone. Thank you for providing all of this information. It certainly helps! I would very much like to get the watch fob to a family member. I paid $30 for it just to make sure that it got home. I suspect that the person originating this didn't realize that it was going to include all of her address book in whatever mailing she authorized Facebook to do. I am wasting way too much of my time in Facebook and?especially?in a couple of the games so I know how easy it is to click on the wrong button while playing these. I don't let them have addresses nor do I let yahoo have the contents of my address book for this very reason. That last fact is probably the only reason I haven't had a message like this show up with my name on it. It turns out this Jacob and Minnie are my people, but still don't know if Halverson is Minnie's maiden name or what. As to the rest of the Popp confusion I really have some justification to whine; As near as I can find the birth date for my Jacob is 22 Sep 1892 while the birth date for the other one (b. in Minnesota where both of them die) is 23 Sep 1891. The father of both of them is John born in WI to add insult to the injury, but I think the mothers and spouses are different. But I keep finding them in each other's neighborhoods and considering how many names the two different families seem terribly fond of I keep thinking they must be related and I just can't find the link.? Merry Christmas everybody, Leslie Chapman pardon any typos I have a serious case of COL (cat on lap) Blankety blank name coincidences! I wandered into my wifes family a couple days ago and decided to take another stab at them, found a whole list of Popp in Iowa hits and part way down list I find; POPP JACOB J 20 MAY 1960 S125 92 92 POPP MINNIE HALVERSON 29 FEB 1924 1259 1 46 and think I have hit a good one, only trouble is my Minnie ma jacob J would be abt 29 with that death date and my Jacob J would be 69, bummer and for a minute I figured I had Minnie's maiden name. So down the page to; http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ia/mitchell/cemeteries/sacredht.txt Where I even find a Frank born in the right year, and twelve Popp's that either match my data base, including a Kate born same year as my Kate ma John, Kate seems to be married to a John, unfortunately his birth year is 11 years earlier than all census data on my guy?? Still think maybe these are my people, guess maybe I should spring for the cost of a death cert for one of them and see what I get. Oh well, sorry to bother you all with my whining but geez how far can name coincidences go, I mean with a surname like Chapman, even the Burt Hard thing wasn't too far fetched but how many of you have a Popp in your family tree?
